It is so exciting when you decide to get a puppy, there is many things that you will have to do to prepare for his arrival. And then there are shots and finding the right vet that will become your puppies doctor for years to come. However the first thing that might be on your mind as you hold him in your arms is what will you name him.
Depending on what breed he is you might want to choose a long and difficult name if you are expecting and showing him. However, if he is just going to be a family pet that you are going to love and cherish for the rest of his life, a simple name will be perfect. Now how are you going to choose the right name for your new friend.
If you have thought of a million names and none seem to be the right fit for him you can always look online for the top dog names. This will pull up a lot of names for you to try out on him, and then if none of them fill right to you ,you can look in normal books and see what you can find.
Whatever you decide to name him will have to be something that you can remember and fill good about, silly names that make you laugh might be alright, but you need to think seriously about will you be able to begin training him if you give him a name like, little puppy poo-poo head. A small puppy could grow into a very large and powerful dog depending on what breed you have brought home. And the name needs to fit him. Little puppy Poo=Poo head just will not fit a Doberman or a pit bull or even a German Shepard. And a tougher name like Samson, Achilles or Odin just does not fit a smaller breed like a poodle, rat terrier or a fox terrier. If your dog is long haired with big soulful eyes or short haired with ears that flop over, then a cute name may be what you are looking for, But if it is a hound dog, or any sort of working breed you need to think of something that will make him and you happy.
Names like dogs come in all sizes, so it will be a lot of fun for you to try to find the right name. If you still cannot find the right name you can always ask your friends and family for help in find just the right one. When a new puppy is brought into your home, your entire family may want to be involved in what he will be named, and while this will be fun it can also cause hurt fillings if a name is rejected without a reason for it. If there are younger children in the home, remind them in a gentle manner why the puppy cannot have a name that they may find cute but you might think is inappropriate, There is no real hurry when it comes to naming your puppy, you will have plenty of time to look online,or in books to find something that will suit him and you. Just keep in mind that once you have selected a name, it is going to be one that your puppy will have his entire life or as long as you have him in your home. Just like you have a good name, one that fits you, so should your puppy if the two of you are going to be able to be proud of it.
